Making Medicare changes

Find a plan that works for you

If you’re satisfied with your current Medicare Advantage plan, you don’t need to do anything. Your plan will automatically renew each year. However, if it’s not meeting your needs, we can help you find a better solution.

Give us a call at (800) 868-9885 (TTY: 711) and we can review your current plan and compare it to the other plans we offer to find the right plan for you. Our licensed agents can take your call October 1 – March 31 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week or April 1 – September 30 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday.

When can you switch your Medicare Advantage plan?

Typically, you can make changes to a Medicare Advantage plan only during the Annual Election Period (AEP), which is October 15 to December 7 each year. Your new coverage will begin January 1.

If you enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan for January 1 and don’t like your plan choice, you can switch to another Medicare plan (with or without Medicare prescription drug coverage) or Original Medicare (with or without Medicare prescription drug coverage) during the Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP) between January 1 and March 31. For more information, see Chapter 10, Section 2.2 of your plan's Evidence of Coverage.

You may be able to take advantage of a Special Enrollment Period to make changes if you:

  • Lose coverage through an employer
  • Move to a new service area
  • Belong to a Medicare Savings Program

Disenrollment

Disenrollment means leaving Health Alliance Plan and no longer being a member. If you decide you want to leave our coverage, there are a number of ways you can do it.

Enrolling in another health plan

In most cases, you can end or change your Health Alliance Plan membership by enrolling in another health plan during an available election period. Medicare’s Annual Election Period (AEP) is from October 15 to December 7. You can also end or change your membership during the annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP) from January 1 to March 31.

Switching to a plan without prescription coverage

During Medicare’s Annual Election Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 to December 7, you may choose to switch from a Health Alliance Plan Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare without a Medicare prescription drug plan. To do so, you must call us at (800) 868-3153 (TTY: 711) and ask to make a new plan selection. Our licensed agents can take your call October 1 – March 31 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week or April 1 – September 30 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. Or you can call Medicare 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round at 1-800-MEDICARE or (800) 633-4227. TTY users should dial (877) 486-2048.

You can also end or change your membership during the annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP) from January 1 to March 31.

Moving or living out of our service area

You can no longer be a Health Alliance Plan member if you move out of the service area. You can then sign up for Original Medicare or, if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, choose a new plan.

If you are a traveler and have an HMO Medicare Advantage plan, your plan has a travel benefit for Michigan (outside our service area), Florida, Texas and Arizona for up to 12 months. If you are a traveler and have a PPO Medicare Advantage plan, your plan has a travel benefit for all 49 states outside of Michigan for up to 12 months.

Involuntary disenrollment

In most cases, you can decide when to end your membership. If we end your membership in our plan, called involuntary disenrollment, we must tell you our reasons in writing. We must also explain how you can make a complaint about our decision.

Questions?

If you have questions about disenrollment or making changes to your Medicare Advantage plan, call our customer service at (800) 422-4641 (TTY: 711). We’re available October 1 – March 31 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week or April 1 – September 30 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday.
